I highly recommend Heeyeon for Korean lessons! I used to live in Korea for 1.5 years and I learned enough Korean while I lived there to "get by." When I came back to the States during the pandemic I didn't have many opportunities to practice anymore. Still, I tried to keep up learning and improving my Korean. I realized after going back to visit Korea in 2023 and 2024 that I was getting frustrated when trying to communicate in Korean because my reading and listening skills had continued to improve while I was away, but my speaking and writing skills were stagnant. I lacked confidence when speaking to Korean people and couldn't express myself.
So I started looking for Korean lessons in the area, finally I found Heeyeon and was so excited to start class with her! The first few lessons I was nervous about doing Korean class using the immersion method, since my speaking skills were weaker, but after a few sessions I started gaining confidence and found myself looking forward to speaking Korean in class. I know when I go back to Korea soon I'll feel much more confident about speaking and communicating in Korean!
In addition to speaking we have also worked on writing. Last spring we practiced writing the responses for the TOPIK II exam writing section, going in depth on the question types, strategies, useful vocabulary and expressions, and written grammar. With Heeyeon's help I was able to improve my TOPIK writing score by 15 points! After the TOPIK was over she helped me start preparing for the entrance exam for Ewha Womans University Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation by going over my translations of the sample English-to-Korean passages to help my writing sound more natural and easy to understand.
Overall I highly recommend using Heeyeon's classes if you are looking to improve any part of your Korean skills! She is a very kind and encouraging teacher and fun to talk to about K-dramas and Korean culture. You will see real improvement and new confidence in your Korean!
As a former student I can’t recommend Heeyeon enough!! If you are interested in Korea, Korean culture and the Korean language, taking lessons with Heeyeon will equip you with everything you need to master the Korean language. After taking Korean lessons for 4 consecutive years, I can confidently say that I now have extensive knowledge of Korean culture and the Korean language.
A few months ago I made the big move from Minneapolis, MN to South Korea and Heeyeon is at the top of the list of people I can thank for leading me to make this big decision. My journey with Heeyeon began back in December 2018 when I signed up for my first ever Korean lessons. At that time I had been very interested in Korean music, Korean reality shows and Korean dramas, and I was looking for ways to learn the language. My number one goal back then was to watch Korean dramas without English subtitles, and I can say that thanks to Heeyeon’s lessons, I have accomplished that goal. I can now watch Korean dramas and reality shows without English subtitles, listen to and understand Korean music and podcasts, and comfortably and confidently converse with Korean native speakers.
In Heeyeon’s lessons, you will not only learn and practice speaking the Korean language, but you will also learn and study all aspects of Korean culture and history. This includes but is not limited to Korean food, traditional clothing, important events, historical figures, Hanja (Chinese characters), Korean idioms, Korean slang (one of my personal favorites), and cultural similarities and differences between Korea and America. Becoming familiar with all of these factors before moving to Korea has made my life here much more comfortable and has made assimilating into Korean life and culture all the more easy.
If you are interested in Korean dramas, Korean music (e.g. K-pop, K-RnB), Korean reality shows, Korean food, Korean culture or the Korean language and you would like to start learning Korean but don’t know where to start, I recommend starting your journey with Heeyeon! Even if you have experience studying the language but would like to brush up on your skills, Heeyeon will test your language skills and place you in the appropriate level. If you have never studied Korean, you will of course first start learning Hangul, the Korean alphabet, which was personally created by King Sejong in the 15th Century with the goal of making it possible for people to learn it in one day. After beginning lessons, as long as you also put in the work, you will see your language skills improve.
I have enjoyed and cherished my time with Heeyeon and if I hadn’t made the big move to Korea, I would still be taking lessons right now... I recommend Heeyeon to anyone and everyone interested in studying Korean and learning about Korean culture.
As a kpop fan for many years, I wanted to learn Korean but was struggling on my own. So I sought out a teacher, which was the best decision ever! The individual attention is amazing, and the classes are matched to my own pace. The teacher is friendly and funny, I always end up laughing every class! I've progressed so much farther with her than I ever could have alone. It really is a huge benefit to learn from a native speaker, too. I would recommend these classes to anyone wanting to learn!
I’ve started taking Korean lessons about 3 years ago. I am enjoying the personalized classes that work at my own pace and allow me to learn quickly through some chapters and spend more time on others, it allows me to practice the Korean language and really practice on the things I need. While Korean looks intimidating at first Heeyeon makes it easy with visuals and in class activities that help you practice while also keeping it fun and something you would use when speaking commonly. It makes the concepts easy to pick up and remember. I’m Amanda and I have been taking classes for almost a year with Heeyeon. As an adult heritage learner, I had always wanted to learn the Korean language to reconnect with my roots. I found the MyKoreanTeacher.com website and decided to finally gift myself lessons and I am so happy that I did. Heeyeon has been a very patient and encouraging teacher and not at all judgmental when I mangle the language. I decided to start learning Korean on a whim to support my wife who was far more interested in it than I. I only took lessons for about 8 months and by the end I was able to pronounce written Korean with ease and understand very basic written and spoken phrases. Since April 2021, I have enjoyed weekly hour-long Korean lessons with Heeyeon. Fast forward to now, February 2023, I am preparing to leave MN for Korea’s Jeju Island on a year-long teaching contract with EPIK (English Program in Korea). After two years of weekly lessons with Heeyeon, she has given me the confidence in my Korean language skills to make this move across the world.
In 2020, I first became interested in learning Korean through K-media, like K-dramas and K-Pop (s/o BTS <3). I had began self-studying as a way to pass the time during the early stages of the pandemic, but quickly realized that I was missing crucial elements: speaking and feedback. While many online courses offer speaking and listening resources, getting feedback on pronunciation from a Native speaker was really important to me, especially when learning the foundations. Heeyeon’s classes provided the exact structure and feedback I was looking for to keep my Korean studies fun and productive. Prior to lessons with Heeyeon, I knew some hangeul and a few very basic phrases. Thanks to Heeyeon, I now have the foundations to confidently navigate beginner conversations and continue my Korean language studies in the country.

What to expect as a student with zero experience -
My wife and I have been taking Korean language lessons from Heeyeon for a few years and we have been able to learn to read, write and speak in Korean very well over time. Her lesson program can be virtual or in person. We have done both! Her program is very structured and in a way that is very effective to understand the concept and structure of the Korean language. This has made it very fun and enjoyable for all of us. She also has a lesson plan with real world scenarios and questions to help the students relate and use in daily life. We are very grateful for her help and she has also been very understanding of our schedules and has adapted our lessons when asked. Her understanding of the Korean language is great enough to be an enormous help when it comes to complex conjugations and pronunciations. Heeyeon is an outstanding teacher. I have been learning Korean with her over the past two years. As an
adult-learner, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I embarked on my language learning journey. I have been amazed at how much my level of confidence has improved with each lesson. I can attest to the fact that Heeyeon’s teaching methods are effective. Her keen ability to discern the unique needs of each student is her superpower. Heeyeon’s supportive teaching style encourages me to take risks in my formulation of sentences in Korean. The language curriculum Heeyeon uses is easy to understand. I enjoy the supplementary resources and tools she uses as she inspires me to keep learning.
Back in 2017, I started watching a Korean show on Netflix when I thought it was a movie. Since then, I've seen so many shows! However, Kdramas need my complete attention or I'll miss something important. So, I started learning Korean with Heeyeon, whom my husband found online. We met with her for about 8 months the first time and then after a break during the pandemic, I returned by myself. It's been about a year since I've been back and Heeyeon has been a great teacher! She is very patient (I do minimal homework and forget words often ^^'), easy to talk to, and will teach you about things you're interested in--not just the subjects from the books. Also, she will never make you feel stupid for saying the completely wrong thing! I've learned a bunch through Heeyeon and although I am nowhere near fluent, I can catch a lot more words while watching my shows! 5/5!
